Basic education in Brazil includes primary education, a period that generally corresponds to children between the ages of six and 14. Divided into two phases, there are differences from elementary school 1 and 2 .
It is during both stages that children and adolescents come into contact with language, human, exact and biological science contents, which are deepened over time and, later, treated once again in high school.
What is elementary education?
Elementary education lasts nine years and is considered a basic right for all children in the country, so school enrollment is mandatory. This is the longest part of the educational period and is divided into early years (elementary school 1) and final years (elementary school 2).
It is the responsibility of parents , together with the authorities , to ensure the education of children. Educational institutions must offer at least 200 effective days of classes, with a minimum duration of 4 hours per day.
Elementary school grades 1 and 2
Since 2006, the duration of primary education has been extended to nine years. Thus, the division between elementary school 1 and 2 was as follows:
Elementary education 1 : corresponds to the grades taken from the 1st to the 5th year, for children aged 6 to 10 years.
Elementary education 2 : referring to the 6th to 9th grades, aimed at teenagers between 11 and 14 years old.
What is the lesson plan for elementary school?
The lesson plan for elementary education (1 and 2) must follow the mandatory references included in the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), a document that determines the curricular parameters for public and private institutions.
The stages and progress of essential learning, as well as pedagogical proposals, are determined by the BNCC. It is the Ministry of Education that outlines the principles and purposes that basic education must have, aiming at inclusion and democracy.
The lesson plans are divided by series and can be worked from the curricular competence, that is, the compulsory subjects for elementary education. They can vary from one school to another, or even according to the teacher’s plan.
Know the differences between Elementary School 1 and 2
The first year of elementary school is intended for children’s literacy , and the later years, of this first stage, are responsible for the cognitive, social and motor development of the students. Subjects such as Portuguese language, mathematics, science, history, geography and arts education are taught in the classrooms.
When they reach the last year of elementary school (5th year), students already have a wider field of knowledge and have more contact with teachers, in addition to new responsibilities , such as more complex homework.
Elementary education 2 is characterized by the maturity of students, who enter a new phase of life: adolescence . The addition of the English language as a curricular subject is mandatory, in addition to studies focused on Afro-Brazilian and indigenous history.
Subjects such as chemistry and physics are also included in the students’ schedule, usually from the 8th grade onwards. It is in these final years that students begin to have a foundation for high school, over an annual workload of 800 hours.
It is worth mentioning that the importance of elementary education is to prepare children and adolescents to become ethical citizens, as well as professionals in the most diverse areas. Not only theoretical and practical knowledge should be on the agenda in class, but also individual autonomy and respect for others.
